Havendale… a Haven in the Heart of Accessible Derbyshire
Havendale is a remarkable single-storey holiday home resting in historic Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
This luxury accessible holiday escape offers self-catering excellence, in a quiet residential area.
A snug accessible holiday home you will never want to leave. It is a very special place a ‘home from home’ in the heart of Accessible Derbyshire, established by a family that are passionate and truly care about those with special requirements.
When a family has access requirements, leaving their home can create challenges that make a holiday ‘not a holiday’. At Havendale all guests, families and carers are able to relax with dignity, from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave.
Havendale, the first accessible self-catering holiday property in Chesterfield, sits within minutes from the bustling medieval market town. The bungalow is within a short drive of major tourism offerings and is perfectly located to explore Derbyshire and the Peak District National Park.
It is also within easy reach of Sheffield, Nottingham, Barnsley and Rotherham with close access to the M1 motorway. Regular trains connect quickly to places such as Derby, Leeds and Meadowhall Retail Outlet. The Holiday Property Havendale is an architecturally designed bungalow built from Derbyshire stone. It has cascading light from floor-to-ceiling windows with roof lights and Amtico hard flooring throughout, you only have to enter the bungalow to ‘feel’ the relaxation.
Whilst the property has been designed to be as accessible as possible, there is no such thing as fully accessible. Everyone is different and has different needs.
The open-plan living space forms the heart of the home, with a sleek, accessible kitchen boasting pull-down cabinets, sensory lighting, and level access through wide bifold doors to the garden.
The dining table is the perfect setting for memorable meals, while you can unwind on the reclining sofa or chair in the sitting area, where a woodburning stove adds warmth and character.
Bedroom one is an accessible bedroom that has a 4ft wide Adjustamatic luxury electric profile bed with bed rails and an ensuite wetroom with Closomat WC and this room has a clear opening door width of 810mm. Bedroom two has a super king luxury Adjustamatic zip and link bed with circulation space (room not ensuite). Bedroom three is a smaller cosy bedroom with 4ft luxury Adjustamatic bed (room not ensuite). Bedroom four is at the opposite end of the bungalow, with one step to access this single bedroom with an ensuite shower room, this room is perfect if a family takes a carer so they can have their own bedroom away from the rest of the family/group.
Outside, the enclosed south-facing garden offers a tranquil spot for alfresco dining, complete with lawn, patio, and barbecue.
With Havendale, the owners have wanted to showcase the challenges of improving access in an already established property and share how they have overcome barriers with accessibility solutions.
The owners have used the technical guidance from the VisitEngland Accessible and Inclusive Tool Kit. Wherever possible (within limitations) they made renovation decisions that meet the needs of 16.8 million disabled people in the country plus their families and friends.
One in four households have access requirements. Many trips are taken by three- or four-generational families.
With age comes disability and in many cases individuals may not class themselves as disabled but benefit from specific adaptations to enable them to enjoy a holiday.
When designing and planning Havendale, the owners didn’t just focus on one area of need. They have created a space that ensures a comfortable break away from home, that could meet the needs of as many people as possible.
They wanted to demonstrate that ‘progress over perfection’ is very important in accessible tourism. No place will ever be perfect for everyone.
The owner, Gillian, says ‘Everywhere is not accessible to everyone but everywhere is accessible to someone’. This simple phrase has stuck with many people and is now used across the UK with many thought leaders in accessible tourism. Chesterfield Chesterfield, which received its market charter in 1204, by King John, and is one of Britain’s largest, most historic open-air markets, which has recently been renovated creating smooth pathways throughout.
Today both the indoor Market Hall and the outdoor market are home to wonderful independent retailers and are popular and thriving.
They host wonderful events, activities, and music along with stalls selling fresh produce at great prices. Chesterfield is famous for its ‘Crooked Spire’ the Church of St Mary and All Saints.
It is a 14th-century church with a twisted lead crooked steeple.
With excellent transport links, accessible trains, buses and taxis, it is the perfect base for a holiday.
With the recent addition of the Peak Sightseer Bus, you get to experience an amazing seasonal wheelchair accessible bus service. The Peak Sightseer Bus do open top tours of circular routes around the Peak District, visiting places such as Baslow, Chatsworth House, Bakewell, Castleton and all the villages in between, this has become such a popular day out for many.
It allows you to hop on, hop off as many times as you like in a day, all included in the one price ticket. Chesterfield is known as the heart of industrial England and a base for the Peak District, it is famous for helping develop some of the first steam engines thanks to its adopted son and father of the railways, George Stephenson.
It is a popular and established destination for both businesses and visitors as well as a super place to live offering a great lifestyle. Meet The Owners Gillian and Russell Scotford have fulfilled their dream and spent two years renovating this ‘Labour of Love’ holiday property, in memory of their son, Thomas, and have created the accessible luxury they had always wanted, but never found.
At 17, Gillian began her nursing career at Sheffield’s renowned spinal injury unit - a life-changing experience. Today, with the nearby Steps Rehabilitation Centre supporting many, Havendale offers a welcoming base for those seeking comfort during treatment.
As parents to three children, two with severe disabilities, Gillian and Russell know what truly makes a holiday special. After years of searching for luxury that also embraced accessibility, they created Havendale: a haven of comfort, inclusivity, and relaxation.
Inspired by her children, Gillian launched Accessible Derbyshire in 2012 - an award-winning charity that funded accessible equipment like sailing boats, climbing harnesses and all-terrain wheelchairs. With accessible tourism thriving, creating Havendale felt like the perfect next step.
Now Director of AccessibleUK, Gillian works nationwide with organisations from the Royal Parks and National Trust to VisitEngland, championing access as a priority for all. Gillian and Russell can’t wait to welcome you to Havendale.

We had a wonderful stay at Havendale, the property had everything we could need and more! The owner was very helpful and amenable. The property was clean and well maintained, it was easy to travel to Sheffield with the train station being a 5 minute drive away. We also had a lovely day at Chatsworth which was about a 20 minute drive and wish we could have stayed at Havendale for longer.
